Waananga 1 - Wetewetea, Whakahoungia
Ka whakaura ngaa aakonga ki te painga me te wehi o te whakatikatikanga, te hangahounga hoki. Kaatahi, ka wetewetea ngaa mea e takirua, ka aata tiitiro ki ngaa taputapu (koowiri tm tm), ka whakahoungia anootia.
Waananga 2 & 3 - Ko te aha te raru? Taataritia, Whakatikatikahia

Students will need to bring a small jar lid for Waananga 1, for keeping track of screws and other bits & pieces. This can become part of your class repair kit! Please let parents/guardians know! Example notice
We have two Repair Surveys - one for students to fill out themselves or by interviewing each other, and one for interviewing an adult whaanau member before the 1st waananga (workshop), to get students & adult whaanau thinking about repairs (forms below).
If you want to devise your own digital Repair Survey with students, make a copy of this Google Form and change it as you like.
The space where the workshops run need to be big enough for small groups of students to have their own space to take things apart and fix things. Working on the floor is fine, as long as there are some tables for resources. If you need to book a space, please do! A whiteboard is also helpful.
Have a think about how best to gather, capture, and share students reflections, learnings, and wonderings from each week of the programme - before, during, and afterwards.

We are learning to value how much time and energy goes into making small everyday items we might use in the classroom or at home. Watch a few minutes of the 2 videos below on how rubber and rubber bands are made. Discuss the resources required to make rubber bands. Probing questions may include:
How many machines were involved in making the rubber bands? What were the machines made from? Who made the machines? How were those machines made?
How many people were involved?
How many steps are involved in making rubber bands?
What other resources or steps might be needed to get the rubber bands from the factory overseas to us?

5. ACTIVITY - Make a Direction Donut (15-30 mins)
A Direction Donut helps young students remember which way to turn - Lefty Loosey or Righty Tighty.
Watch the video and make with students - make sure they put their name on theirs! They can decorate it as much as they want.
They'll need: pen, cardboard (or paper), scissors.

6. Waananga 2 & 3 preparation - Find Broken Items
Start a class list and collection of broken items brought from school or home. Talk to teachers, school caretaker, parents/guardians to find things that need repair.
Remind students at the end of each day to look for and bring broken items in - set a class goal, make a class challenge or a class competition!
In this waananga we will be taking apart and putting back together old telephones from the '90s. We will develop skills and confidence in taking things apart and putting them back together, while at the same time discovering the inner workings of products. I'll bring the phones and screwdriver kits (kits also available for purchase).

In these waananga we will be using our worksheets to analyse items for repair, come up with a solution, and attempt a fix. I'll bring a variety of tools and materials which can be used for repairing items. We will both bring items that need repair.

In this waahanga, we are learning what to do when we can't fix an item. We'll look at options around Re-purposing (including Up-Cycling) & Recycling, and during the waananga, students will practice taking items apart and separating and sorting the components.
Watch this video with students and discuss what different objects in your class are made from.
Print out this image from Waipa District Council. Discuss how students could ReThink, Refuse, and Reduce in school or at home.
Discuss how items that couldn't be repaired over the last few weeks could be repurposed. Examples include: a bread tag fixing a jandal, or a magnet in a toothbrush (see below).
Recycling is a last resort, when we absolutely cannot re-use or re-pair, or re-purpose the item. Things which can commonly be recycled are:
Metal - iron-based, aluminium, copper etc
Wood-based - paper, cardboard
Glass
Plastics 1 or 2
Fabric and circuit boards can be recycled, though this is usually specialised and not available in household recycling.
Discuss with students:
What can be recycled in household recycling,
Where your local recycling centre is, and
What can be recycled there.
This activity is about finding waste in school or home and making decisions on how to deal with it.
Print out or make a digital copy of this Google Doc and get students to identify a waste problem and create a solution.
In these waananga we will take apart old DVD/CD drives, look at what can be re-purposed, and sort the rest into recyclables and non-recyclables. I'll bring the DVD drives and the tools.
